The Cost of Love (A Freewrite)

fog
They want the sunshine of love,
but not if it means they have to stand in the rain.

They want the smile of romance,
but are unwilling to withstand the pain.

They want all of love’s passion,
but turn away as soon as they get too close to the flame.

They want it to last a lifetime,
but start plotting their getaway as soon as they feel the strain.

They want
all ups
no downs
big smiles
no frowns
all frills
no risks

They say they want love,
but are chasing a lie that doesn’t exist.

Yeah there’s bliss
Definitely happiness
Romantic interludes
Punctuated by a passionate kiss,

…but life is a bitch…
got you bobbing and weaving
while its throwing punches
trying to split your lip

got you questioning your love to the point
where you feel the mate of your soul
starting to slip

got you struggling to hold on
any second about to lose your grip

Yeah, there’s bliss
Definitely happiness
Romantic interludes
Punctuated by a passionate kiss,

…but life is a bitch
and if you really want love like you say,
you have to risk everything you are
and work for it… ~ Sean King

Midnight Reflections

After spending the last 15 years observing the steadfast love of my wife’s grandparents, there’s no way you can convince me that the things we chase today:

  • Degrees
  • Fancy cars
  • Good jobs
  • Plush houses and
  • Prestige

will ever produce a greater reward than two humble people living modestly within their means, rooted in God, and completely dedicated to one another.

You can keep your American dream and your Apple Pie, I’m trying to build my future on the pillars of old school love.
