The Choice is Yours

Thankful

When I was younger, I had some friends that always seemed to be happy no matter what was going on around them, and to be honest, I thought they were either being fake or very fortunate to never have bad things happen.

I also had friends that no matter what was going on around them always seemed to be down with a permanent frown. I always believed they were over dramatic and wondered how life could ALWAYS be as bad as they made it out to be?

After much observation and many days (sometimes years) of trying to dissect my friends (Lol), I realized that my happy friends were dealing with the same kind of issues as my unhappy ones.  The difference being, they made a CHOICE to take it all in stride and to radiate happiness regardless of circumstance.

My melancholy friends on the other hand, always seemed as if they sought sadness.   As if there was no one or nothing in this world that could cheer them up.  Over time, I would learn that they too made a CHOICE to allow their circumstance to ruin their days and nights.

Now that I’m older, I realize that I must come across as that happy person that people think is happy because I live a privileged life.  A life in which everything is perfect. Hopefully, the people who believe that will understand, as I came to understand, that HAPPINESS IS SOMETHING WE CHOOSE to be, or not to be.

Own your life
Choose your happiness
Radiate your love
Embrace your destiny,
This is the power God gave to us. ~ Sean King

Perspective

How could I look at all the beauty God has blessed me with and still have the audacity to think that something is wrong with my life? I can’t.

That’s the thing with people that enjoy privilege. We have the nerve to feel sorry for ourselves and to ignore our good health, healthy kids, loving family, supportive friends, transportation, job, medical and dental insurance, the roof over our heads, God, and even the fact that we woke up and have been given another opportunity to do something amazing with our lives.

Let me just say, I’m thankful I grew up how and where I grew up. Thankful I grew up around people doing good and doing bad. Thankful I’ve been exposed to life and death, that I’ve been able to see people clawing and fighting for their piece of happiness and to be around people who’ve been given the world on a platter and still find things to complain about. I’m thankful because I understand just how preposterous it would be for me to wake up and complain about my life as I stand in the light of all that I have been blessed with.

Sometimes we just need to change the way we see things, not the things that we see.

I Don’t See Ugly

Celebrate Life

When I see you at your lowest point
I don’t see ugly
I see uncertainty
as you try to balance the weight
of walking God’s path
while simultaneously trying to fit into man’s world

When I see you at your lowest point
I don’t see ugly
I see insecurity
as the damage of the years
of negative attacks
from your peers
and even your family
start to weigh you down
with enough doubt
to make you wonder,
what if they’re right

When I see you at your lowest point
I don’t see ugly
I see a work in progress

Someone who’s battle tested
and scarred
yet still fighting

Someone who’s been beaten up
and kicked while they were down
but still getting up

Someone who’s been doubted
and told they would never amount to anything
yet still chasing their dreams

Someone who’s fallen short
and been labeled a failure
but still has the audacity to believe
God has a plan

When I see you at your lowest point
I don’t see ugly
I see someone
who needs to breathe
reflect
to remember all those other times
when you fell in a hole so deep
that you never thought the light would
find you again
just before you did something amazing

When I see you at your lowest point
I don’t see ugly
I see beauty
I see power
I see resilience
I see life
I see light
I see love
I see infinite possibilities

I see dreams,
Your dreams
coming to fruition

I see truth and destiny
just within arms reach

I see you,
right on the verge
ready to ignore your fear
just long enough to say I do
to your greatness…

and why not
you’ve already come this far..
